The bedroom is a place where you spend a lot of time and so it makes sense to put time and effort into buying the right furniture.
Of course if you only need temporary furniture, you may be looking at things differently than if you have just bought your first home or just won the lottery.
If you are at the time of your life when you appreciate good furniture and have a little money to spend on it, you will want the best possible pieces. If you are only in temporary digs, something practical and cheap may be more suitable.
There are several things to consider when buying any kind of bedroom furniture though. These are the price, the size of room you have, the function it needs to perform, and the style of the pieces (which will have an effect on the look of the entire room).
With any bedroom, the bed is the most important item and it is probably the largest item too. The bed will set the tone for the rest of the room because it draws the eye. Bear this in mind when choosing. If you want a wooden four-poster that Henry VIII would have been proud of, it will obviously need a different style of furniture to go with it than an elegant French-style metal bed. Choose carefully because it will be expensive to re-style your bedroom. Additionally, consider if your bed needs to provide storage – if so you will probably want something with built in drawers.
As well as choosing the frame carefully, spend a good amount of time getting the right mattress. You spend many hours of your life in bed and so you will need something comfortable that will give you the right back support.
The next most important thing to consider is somewhere to store your clothes. That could be a wardrobe, a chest of drawers or both.
Some people like to watch TV in bed but because the bedroom is primarily a room to relax and sleep in, consider something to hide your TV away in when it is not in use.
If you have a small bedroom it is also worth considering a large mirror to give the illusion of more space. Make sure that it matches the style of your room though.
If you are also kitting out a child’s room it is worth considering how long you want it to last – if you are happy to buy new pieces fairly soon then you can buy for your immediate situation. If you need something to last a good long time, consider how your child’s taste will change as they get older and remember that they will be getting bigger too. Modular furniture can be good because you can add to it as you go along and change the configuration when you want to freshen things up.
If you are stuck for styling ideas, look at a few interior design or home magazines – they will inspire you to create a bedroom you can be proud of.
